A Closer Look at Stress

Stress is a widely used word in today’s society and studies have proven that it is responsible for causing many “diseases” in the body. It affects nutritional needs, the immune system and it causes Hormone imbalances. Stress increases the body’s caloric needs by up to 200 percent. It can also increase the body’s need for protein from 60 – 500 percent. The demand for Vitamin A increases, while the body is trying to maintain healthy skin and mucous membranes. Vitamin C diminishes with stress and it impairs the immune system from working efficiently, Thiamine Riboflavin, Niacin and Zinc are all depleted as well. Stress also contributes to weight gain, as research has determine that when there is indeed a connection between the two.

Stress stimulates the formation of adrenaline and a heart toxin called C-reactive protein. These damage the heart, casue arrhythmias, high blood pressure and increase the risk of heart attack by up to 600%. Stress also elevates levels of the aging hormone, cortisol, which suppresses immune function and causes memory loss. Chronic stress can cause insulin resistance and increase the risk of diabetes. It also upsets the balance of brain neurotransmitters (brain messengers), resulting in depression, anxiety and insomnia. Stress suppresses thyroid function , causing hyperthyroidism and fatigue.

How to Reduce Stress

By being active and exercising, adequate amounts of sleep, healthy eating (thereby balancing blood sugar, through correct kilojoule intake and eating regularly), and reducing avoiding excessive amounts of caffeine. All of these will help to reduce the production of Cortisol, which immediately improves our mood and improves our self-esteem. In stressful situations, individuals who take charge and have a positive outlook reduce the pressure that they perceive. This reduces cortisol levels, which reduces chronic stress and weight gain.

Proper rest also keeps cortisol levels low  (eight hours is optimal), as does keeping our bodies in an Alkaline state, which keeps acid levels down.

We need to be in a PH-balanced state, so we should avoid acidic foods and drinks as much as possible.

We also need to relax by listening  to relaxing music or trying to achieve a “Meditative” State a few times per day. Ten minutes at a time is all that is needed to be still and to clear your mind of the day’s silliness and chatter.
